Despite looming newsroom job cuts, New York Times columnist David Carr found a way to energize more than 100 journalists gathered to celebrate the 2007 Minnesota SPJ Page One Awards.
“We perform miracles on a daily basis,” Carr said.

“We meet at 10:00 every morning and we’ve got nothing–bupkis.” Then, seemingly by magic, “we wake up the next morning and there is this glorious thing we made.”
Carr spoke at this year’s banquet honoring Minnesota journalists. He both taunted and defended mainstream media outlets. “There are flowers blooming all around but it’s the oak trees that people look to,” Carr said, comparing upstart online challengers with traditional print and broadcast mainstays.
Also at the event, former KSTP-TV executive producer and SPJ board member Gary Hill received the 2007 Peter S. Popovich Freedom of Information Award.
