Meeting Minutes for the Annual Meeting
June 27, 2007 6:30 pm
Sweeney’s Saloon
Members attending: pres. Art Hughes; pres-elect Joan Gilbertson; sec. Yvonne Klinnert; treas. Nicole Garrison-Sprenger; directors: Sarah Moran; Amanda Lutz; Scott Theisen; Sarah Bauer; Jane Kirtley; David Beal; Quorum present
Guests: Harrison and Dexter
Members decide to forego the treasurer’s report. Hughes distributes copies of the annual report to national SPJ, which includes a year-end summation of the chapter’s fiscal status.
It’s decided Hughes will act as secretary and disseminate the meeting minutes.
Hughes asks for direction on proceeding with presenting names to national SPJ for state Sunshine Committee chair. Kirtley reminds members national can do whatever it wants whether we supply names of people we want or not. She also warns the position is time intensive and we should be sure anyone we recommend has the time and inclination.
Members consider several names, including attny John Borger, U of M instructor Chris Ison and Star Tribune reporter Dan Browning. Board members agree all would make excellent watchdogs of open access, depending on their willingness. It’s agreed Hughes will contact Borger no later than early next week (July 2) to see if he’s interested, then we will reassess and proceed from there.
Hughes and Bauer take the ballots to a separate room for counting. They report the following results of the election to the board:
Pres-elect: Nicole Garrison-Sprenger (27 votes)
Treasurer: Dave Beal (26 votes)
Secretary: Scott Theisen (27 votes)
Directors
Amanda Lutz (27 votes)
Don Davis (27 votes)
Alyssa Ford (25 votes)
Andy Tellijohn (26 votes)
Jeff Achen (27 votes)
Karen Lundegaard (27 votes)
There are four two-year directors positions and two one-year positions. In accordance with the bylaws the candidates receiving the least amount of votes fill the one-year seats. Ford and Tellijohn are assigned the two year seats.
The board toasted outgoing members Klinnert, Moran and Todd Melby and thanked them for their service and commitment to journalism.
Meeting adjourned.
