Covering Minnesota’s Hmong Community:
The culture, the community and the challenges in covering America’s largest Hmong population
What: The Twin Cities are home to the largest Hmong population in the United States, yet many Minnesotans know very little about this influential community. SPJ will convene a panel of experts including journalists and Hmong community leaders who will speak about Hmong culture, what it means to be Hmong in Minnesota and the challenges to covering the community in both the mainstream and ethnic media. After their presentation, there will be plenty of time for questions.

Frank Premack Public Affairs Journalism Award

The Frank Premack Memorial Award competition is one of the state’s most coveted and celebrated journalism honors. Started in 1975 after the death of Frank Premack, a reporter and editor at the Minneapolis Tribune, the competition seeks entries from all Minnesota media doing public affairs journalism in their community or region.
All journalists – working in print, broadcast and online media – who exhibited outstanding public affairs journalism in 2007 are encouraged to submit entries. For complete contest information, please visit the Minnesota Journalism Center Web site today.
