The event will also feature a silent auction during the reception hour.
All proceeds will help fund student scholarships (we give away two each year)! We’ve got some fantastic items, including GREAT Twins tickets, free coffee for a year from Caribou Coffee, and books from local journalist-authors (just to name a few)!

2009 Page One Awards — Enter Today!

CALL FOR ENTRIES
2009 PAGE ONE AWARDS

The Minnesota Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (MN SPJ) recognizes the best in Minnesota journalism each year with its annual Page One Awards. This year, MN SPJ is excited to announce that it has put the entry process online. Entrants can submit entries and payment at: https://newscouncil.wufoo.com/forms/2009-page-one-awards-contest-entry-form/.

SPJ has also revamped several entry categories, expanding its awards for the state’s best magazine and online journalism. In addition, for the first time, magazine and online entries will be judged in separate divisions, based on newsroom size or affiliation.

We are currently accepting 2009 Page One contest entries from newspapers, magazines, weekly news publications, television and radio newsrooms, and online news outlets. The contest winners will be honored at SPJ’s Page One Banquet, an annual spring event celebrating excellence in Minnesota journalism.

Journalists working for all print, broadcast and online news outlets in Minnesota (or news outlets in neighboring states that cover Minnesota) are eligible to enter. All work published or broadcast during the 2008 calendar year is eligible. Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, February 18th, 2009. The fee is $20 per entry.

2009 Page One Awards – Category Descriptions

Go to MN SPJ’s online entry form to enter the 2009 Page One Awards. Explanations of each entry category, as well as contest entry tips are below. Entry deadline is Wednesday, February 18, 2009.

ENTRY TIERS:
NEWSPAPER: Less than 50,000 circulation/50,000+ circulation
MAGAZINE: Less than 50,000 circulation/50,000+ circulation
RADIO: Less than 3 newsroom employees/3+ newsroom employees
TELEVISION: Less than 50 newsroom employees/50+ newsroom employees
(newsroom employees can include reporters, producers, anchors, photojournalists, etc.)
ONLINE: Affiliated with print or broadcast news outlet/Independent Web site

1. NEWSPAPER — NEWS AND FEATURE
A. Spot news (One or more stories on a spot news event)
B. Short feature (A single feature story of less than 30 inches)
C. Long feature (A single feature story of more than 30 inches)
D. In-depth (One or more stories that help the reader understand a situation beyond information provided in a typical news story)
E. Investigative (One or more stories containing information not readily available to the news media or public and obtained through reporter initiative) [...]
