MNSPJ is happy to announce Lizzy Nyoike and Maya Betti as its 2026 scholarship recipients. The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a career in broadcast, print, online or visual journalism.

This year, MNSPJ expanded its scholarship opportunity and added one $1,000 scholarship, thanks to support from its members.

Lizzy Nyoike is the recipient of MNSPJ’s $2,000 student scholarship. Lizzy is a University of Minnesota Class of 2027 student interested in broadcast journalism. She impressed the committee’s judges with her extensive and well-sourced reporting experience, from writing for the Minnesota Daily and Minnesota Spokesman–Recorder to putting together video reels for Power 104.7. She’s covered a wide variety of topics, from arts and entertainment to business and child care.

Maya Betti is the recipient of MNSPJ’s $1,000 student scholarship. Maya is a St. Olaf College Class of 2027 student interested in covering politics and public policy and their impacts on everyday life. She impressed the judges with her well-sourced reporting and self-starter attitude, as she attends a college without a journalism program.

Maya has worked as the executive editor at The Olaf Messenger and reported for KYMN Radio, Press Publications, The Roseville Reporter and The Park Bugle. At this time, she also is completing a summer internship in New York.

Congratulations Lizzy and Maya from MNSPJ!
